The Discourse of Humanity's Expansion and the Alienation of the Subject: A Critical Inquiry into Ray Kurzweil's Singularity Theory

초록

This paper analyzes Ray Kurzweil's Singularity theory not as a technological prediction, but as a powerful discourse on “expansion of humanity”. While Kurzweil's technological optimism seems to promise salvation from biological limits, as N. Katherine Hayles points out, this results in reducing humans to information and alienating “embodied experience”. Furthermore, from the perspectives of Fredric Jameson and Yuval Noah Harari, the Singularity discourse is an ideological narrative that replaces the decline of political imagination with a technological utopia, and is akin to a myth that turns science into a “fantasy of omniscience”. This paper draws on alternatives from critical posthumanism, such as the works of Donna Haraway and Rosi Braidotti, to argue for the importance of contemplating communal ethics and co-evolution, rather than individual transcendence through technology.
