In general, the hysteretic behaviour of steel structures subjected to dynamic loading such as earthquake is different to that subjected to static loading. This is due to change of the mechanical and the hysteretic characteristics of structural steels during dynamic deformation. To accurately predict hysteretic behaviour of steel structures under dynamic loading, the difference of load carrying capacity and deformation behavior in accordance with various loading rates, assumed static and dynamic deformation conditions, must be investigated. In this paper, numerical analyses of circular steel columns are performed for loading rate and diameter-thickness ratio by using three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis employed dynamic hysteresis model. Characteristics of hysteretic behavior of circular steel columns for loading rate are clarified by analysis results. © 2007 Civil-Comp Press.
