헤테로토피아적 전시공간연구 - 더텍사스프로젝트를 중심으로 -

초록

‘The Texas Project' refers to a forum for experimental art which is progressed in ‘Miari Texas area'. The street was filled with brothels, but now, is used as a place for experimental arts. The Texas Project was a place for sexual utopia, but now, is a heterotopic space exposing the false utopia from the past. The term ‘Heterotopia' was coined by a French philosopher, Michel Foucault. It is a place on the opposite side of utopia that breaks its unity and order. The place is devoid of any form of generalization. The de-generalization, mixed with the escape of order, creates this irregular space. Utopia is a place where unrealistic desires are met. Unlike utopia, heterotopia defy the unrealistic fantasies to become a realistic version of utopia, a space of things and other minds. The Texas Project started in August, 2013, and for 3 years, the place was filled with exhibitions and musical performances. The act of art, the type of exhibition, the destruction of formality, the peculiarity of place, and its impermanence made the place differentiate itself from other alternative art spaces. The space prides itself for allowing artists to design, produce, market, and install the exhibitions/performances themselves. It is what makes it crucial for artists utilizing this space to have ‘independent philosophies'. The place is also a case of reconstructing a space once filled with negative aspects to create positive cultural movements. The Texas Project is now a new place reinterpreted by numerous artists creating works that spans between the vague realities and imagination. The artistic value of the place has been discovered, and its place in the history and society will remain solid.
