초록

MXenes gained recent attention due to their distinct characteristics and potential applications. These two-dimensional materials hold immense promise for photothermal therapy (PTT). A notable area of MXene research focuses on their application in oncology as a potential anticancer treatment. The underlying mechanism behind MXene-mediated PTT varies depending on the MXene/composite. MXenes exhibit exceptional photothermal properties, effectively generating heat when exposed to near-infrared (NIR) laser radiation. Furthermore, in vitro experiments have demonstrated the selective eradication of cancer cells through MXene-based PTT while leaving normal cells unharmed. In vivo experiments conducted on mice with tumor xenografts have shown significant inhibition of tumor growth and prolonged survival upon treatment with MXenes and NIR laser radiation. This chapter provides a summary of the current knowledge surrounding MXenes and their photothermal properties in combating cancer, including their ability to induce cancer cell death and impede tumor growth, and postsurgery treatment. It also addresses the challenges and future directions involved in developing MXenes as a viable anticancer therapy. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
