King Hyogong's Succession to the Throne and Choi Chi-won in Late Silla

초록

The thesis focused on Choi Chi-won's role while examining the background of the succession of King Hyogong to the throne of Silla's 52nd King Hyogong. King Hyogong was the illegitimate child of King Heongang. In Silla, bastards were excluded from the succession of the king. However, as the political dynamics and the principle of paternal succession were emphasized at the time, the bastard, King Hyogong, came to the throne. King Hyogong, who was from a son of concubine, needed to secure the legitimacy of succession to the throne. It was Choi Chi-won, a Confucian scholar, who played a leading role in the succession of King Hyogong to the throne. Choi Chi-won not only supported King Hyogong's succession to the throne, but also played a role in justifying King Hyogong's succession to the throne through a paternal-centered genealogy consciousness, a Confucian way of inheriting the throne called concession, and sustain good diplomatic relationship with China.
