The Mediating Effects of Gratitude and Cognitive Flexibility on the Relationship Between University Students’ Depression and Psychological Well-being

초록

This study aimed to examine the relationship between depression, gratitude, cognitive flexibility, and psychological well-being, and also to examine the mediating role of gratitude and cognitive flexibility in the relation between depression and psychological well-being in university students. A total of 341 university students participated in this study. As a result, depression was negatively associated with gratitude, cognitive flexibility, and psychological well-being; whereas gratitude, cognitive flexibility, and psychological well-being were positively associated with each other. Depression decreased gratitude, cognitive flexibility, and psychological well-being; conversely gratitude and cognitive flexibility positively influenced psychological well-being. Moreover, both gratitude and cognitive flexibility were partially mediated in the relationship between depression and psychological well-being and also a dual mediation effect was verified. The role of gratitude and cognitive flexibility will be important for university students experiencing depression to enhance psychological well-being. The findings are expected to serve as a basis for the development of educational programs that enhance gratitude and cognitive flexibility at university settings.
