Umberto Eco’s Semiotics and Criticism and Application of Concept of ‘Structure’

초록

The purpose of this article is to examine the discussions on semiotics and structural concepts of Umberto Eco. Eco’s research was a lengthy process to discover the properties of this general semiotics. He introduced the notion of interpretant in the sign construction model advocated by Peirce and uses it as the epitome of semiosis to be put forward in general semiotics. Eco paid attention to arbitrariness as one of the important elements of general semiotics beyond the characteristic of linguistic signs based on complete unmotivated relationship. This semiosis makes arbitrariness a characteristic of general semiotics beyond the individual characteristics of linguistic signs based on complete unmotivated relationship. Eco made various attempts to describe the creation process of meaning and its mode of existence from the perspective of interpretation. These efforts are revealed in a comprehensive attitude that does not make an extreme choice between the fluidity of his concept of ‘interpretation’ and the uncertainty of the concept of ‘meaning’. Under the influence of Postmodernism, which advocated the absence of definite truth due to the occurrence of completely infinite meanings, it is probably one of the reasons why Eco is appreciated for providing theoretical discussions that can guard against ‘overinterpretation’. It is difficult to conclude that Eco completely broke with the concept of structure or utilized it. Rather, such an ambiguous relationship setting makes it necessary to further study the structure concept itself and the interpretation of the subject.
