Analysis of the Phenomenon of Food Deserts in Urban-Rural Complex Cities Due to Local Extinction for Elderly Residential Areas

In some of shrinking population areas, elderly are vulnerable to access to affordable fresh foods due to the food supply system heavily rely on urban setting. The purpose of this study is to analyze the food desert formation especially in urban-rural complex cities, Gunsan-si and explore the possible solution for food distribution using public facilities; Kyungrodangs as one type of social overhead capitals. For analysis, Q-GIS 3.34.8 program was used. The food desert area was defined as a residential area with a high concentration of elderly people excluded from the buffering space, within 500 m from the location of each fresh food store. Some areas are difficult for access to fresh food market for elderly by walking. In order to solve the food desert phenomenon, local community center and elderly welfare facility, Kyungrodang could be used as one of the alternatives for food distribution.
