Factors Influencing Problem Drinking among Female College Students in Korea

초록

Women are more vulnerable than men to adverse consequences of alcohol consumption. Physically, women achieve higher concentrations of alcohol in the blood, which leads to more impairment than men given the equivalent amount of alcohol. Although there is a growing trend in female alcohol use in Korea in the past decade, research attention has been relatively limited. This study attempted to examine individual, cognitive, and environmental factors influencing college students' problem drinking, and sought to discriminate factors specific to women that differ from men. The sample consists of 3,342 college students selected from nationwide, who were asked to fill out a self-administered questionnaire that inquired about drinking behavior, alcohol expectancies, peer drinking, adverse life experiences, and depressive symptoms. Study results indicated that family history was a predictor of male problem drinking, whereas depressive symptoms were predictor of female problem drinking. The degree of influential factors were also different among male and female college students, showing that adverse life experiences had a stronger influence on males compared to female students. These findings point to the direction of a differentiated intervention for males and females. More implications for prevention efforts were discussed.
