초록
Outward foreign direct investment (FDI) by Korean firms has been increasing since the late 1990s. It has been concentrated on Asia. The purpose of this paper is to examine characteristics of Korean FDI into Asia, compared to the FDI into Asia of the rest of the world. The paper derives the following empirical findings. Korean firms tend to invest more into countries open to trade, low in per capita GNI. However, the infrastructure such as telecommunications turns out to have little effect on the level of investment. Overall, outward FDI of Korean firms seems to be motivated by cost reduction via low wages in host countries.
