초록
Dubbing has been stigmatized as “lie” and “inauthentic” as its process erases the original dialogue. However, it can be ungrounded accusations without concrete empirical studies. Indeed, some films have different narrative structures between its original and dubbed version. This study analyzes Yongary, Monsters from the Deep , a South Korean kaiju film featuring Yongary, directed by Kim Ki-duk. The film’s ending is daringly disparate in its original and dubbed version, which requires a thorough narrative analysis. The aim of the study is to identify the difference in narrative structures of the original and its dubbed dialogues and provide plausible explanation. Vladimir Propp’s morphology of the folktale was adopted as a method to seek narratological distinction in a syntactical manner. Translation studies may be furthered by the incorporation of the narratological perspectives into the audiovisual translation studies as all films are stories and narratives.
