A study on the scar and vulnerability represented in Kim So-Jin’s novels

초록

This study explores the meaning of vulnerability depicted in Kim So-jin's novels by examining how personal wounds intersect in a historical context. Existing studies on Kim So-jin's novels tend to interpret his storytelling as a narrative of memories based on original experiences, often identifying the process of overcoming childhood wounds symbolized by the “father.” However, these studies do not thoroughly capture thematic and material changes in his works, despite the short period of writing. Kim So-jin's novels written around 1994 reconsider the significance of the “father.” Specifically, social changes around 1994, the birth of his son, relocation to “New-Town,” and transition to a full-time writer prompted the author to attempt "new ways of writing." While his previous works tended to reproduce the history of “division” and “ideology” in relation to his personal experience, his works after this period began to view these historical situations from a more expanded perspective. This study focuses on Patterns of Time, The Bicycle Thief, and Primary-Color Illustrated Biology Book, published in 1994 and 1995. Each work reconstructs the wounds and memories left behind by communism, poverty, and the division of characters. The characters in Kim So-jin's novels reveal an attitude of accepting wounds as part of life, rather than hastily trying to heal social wounds. Paying attention to their wounds is not only the author's examination of vulnerability as a human condition but is also related to the author's ethical stance of remembering the wounds and suffering of others that history has tried to conceal. Therefore, Kim So-jin's novels can be reread as texts that resist the force of hastily stitching up the scars and traumas left by history through the portrayal of characters with wounds and traumas from their time, embodying the will to resist violence and oppression.
