Most of the written texts, including newspaper reports, are composed of narration and conversation. In written texts, participants’ real, oral talk of the events is represented as reporting constructions in terms of direct or indirect speech. This research analyzes reporting constructions in terms of heteroglossia, claiming that others’ voices in reporting talk are one of the methods of utilizing other voices to deliver the reporters’ opinions manipulated by the media organizations. After briefly reviewing the distinction between direct speech and indirect speech, critical discourse analysis, and heteroglossia, this study explores how others’ voices are represented in newspaper report texts, showing that there is a discrepancy between the real talk and its representation in written texts. Examination of the news report articles shows that written media texts are constructed of the reporter’s and others’ voices, rather than faithfully citing the others’ voices. This research explores functions of reported constructions in the following terms: (i) avoiding commitment to the information being delivered, (ii) delivering reporters’ attitudes such as disbelief or incredulity toward others’ statements or claims, (iii) providing indirect opinions in others’ voices, etc. This study claims that reported speech in media texts is reporters’ constructed texts according to their ideology and power in spite of their claims about value-neutrality, justice and impartiality in their reports. Finally, this research suggests that a critical-discourse analytic approach and the notion heteroglossia are useful for better understanding and explanation of reporting constructions in the production and structuring of media texts.
