Prandtl-Batchelor Theory for Kolmogorov Flows

Two-dimensional stationary solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with exterior forcing often exhibit regular patterns at high Reynolds numbers. To explain these patterns theoretically, we apply a theory that was developed independently by Prandtl and Batchelor. Specifically, we apply this theory to nearly circular or elliptical vortices that appear in Kolmogorov flows, and we show that the theoretical predictions agree well with the numerical data.
