This study examines the Slavic slave trade, its social functions, and roles within the broader context of slavery, slave trading networks, and trade routes in medieval Europe. Of particular significance is the etymological link between the English word slave and Slav, a term denoting the Slavic peoples. This linguistic evidence underscores the widespread and systematic trafficking of Slavic slaves across various societies and regions during the period. The term sclavus, originally referring to Slavs, eventually came to denote slaves in general, further highlighting the prominence and scale of the Slavic slave trade. The Slavs, who inhabited regions along major waterways such as the Dnieper and Volga Rivers, were especially susceptible to external raids and slave trading expeditions conducted along these riverine routes. Captured Slavic individuals were transported and sold to markets in Western Europe, North Africa, and the Islamic world of the Middle East. Key trade routes spanned the Mediterranean, Caspian, and Black Seas, with important commercial hubs including Constantinople in the Byzantine Empire and Baghdad under the Abbasid Caliphate, serving as principal centers of demand. Additionally, cities such as Kiev functioned as major suppliers of slaves, while Venice and Prague acted as key secondary distribution centers. The Slavic slave trade not only sustained regional economies but also facilitated significant cultural and economic exchanges between Europe, the Middle East, and the Islamic world. Between the 8th and 10th centuries, Slavic slaves from Eastern Europe and the Baltic regions were sold into the households of Byzantine and Islamic elites, where they were employed in military service, construction, agriculture, and domestic labor. The trade in Slavic slaves further intensified with the Mongol invasions and the expansion of Italian trading interests in the Black Sea region, marking a critical phase in the development of transcontinental commerce and cross-cultural interactions.
