This paper aims to clearly understand the meaning of the verses related to “Heaven” written in the translated Bible by explaining the traditional conceptual word “nation[國].” This paper aims to clearly understand the meaning of the verses related to “Heaven” written in the translated Bible by explaining the pre-modern concept of “nation[國].” The concept of a nation used today differs from the concept of “nation [國]” in the pre-modern period, but the Bible was translated in the pre-modern time. In a pre-modern sense, “nation[國]” is not based on ‘territory,’ but on the extent of its ‘sovereignty.’ And it is the people who accept and obey it. The governance and management of “nation[國]” are not imposed on a land basis but on a people basis. Therefore, in the jurisdiction of where the land belongs, the key is which district’s official document the “people” who farm the land are listed on. Due to the pre-modern concept of “nation[國]” rooting on sovereignty, “nation[國]” has the same meaning as “reign, royal authority, and power,” and is synonymous with “the monarch” itself, and “the people.” If you read the Bible knowing that there is such a multifaceted nature in the word “nation[國],” you can more accurately grasp phrases about “Heaven.” This understanding of the “nation[國]” in the pre-modern sense was also a factor that could greatly help Christians reading translated bibles to understand the heart of the gospel. Modern people can benefit the same way if they understand this concept.
