The Process of the Introduction and Establishment of Women's Bodybuilding in South Korea

초록

This study examines the process of the introduction and establishment of women's bodybuilding in South Korea. The interest in bodybuilding grew as fitness clubs emerged in the 1970s, leading to increased participation of women in these clubs. The presence of foreign women bodybuilders was introduced to Korean society through photographs and articles published by various newspapers. In 1980, the first competition allowing women bodybuilders to participate was held, marking the official beginning of women's bodybuilding in Korea. With extensive support from the Korean Bodybuilding Federation in 1988, female bodybuilders began participating in international competitions and achieved notable results, solidifying women's bodybuilding as a recognized women's sport. As prominent male bodybuilding competitions in Korea established women's divisions, female bodybuilders gained expanded opportunities to compete and achieved an equal status and position with men. Additionally, as the effectiveness of women's bodybuilding was recognized and a shift in perception occurred, it started to gain popularity among the general public, paving the way for its mainstream acceptance.
