Intercultural Contact Multicultural Competence in Higher Education Exchange Programs : The Mediating Role of Educational Satisfaction

초록

This study investigates how intercultural contact relates to multicultural competence in higher education, focusing on the mediating role of educational satisfaction. Using survey data from 137 students in the CAMPUS Asia Plus program, the study employs descriptive statistics, t-tests, analysis of variance, and mediation analysis. The findings show that, despite below-average levels of intercultural contact, students reported generally positive perceptions of educational satisfaction and multicultural competence. Perceptions of the three variables also differed significantly across background characteristics. In addition, intercultural contact had no significant direct effect on multicultural competence, whereas educational satisfaction fully mediated this association. The results highlight that the value of intercultural contact lies not simply in its occurrence, but in the extent to which it is accompanied by satisfying educational experiences. These findings offer practical implications for the design of international exchange programs in higher education.
