Isomorphism and Inertia of Leadership

초록

This study attempts to explain the antecedents and outcomes of isomorphism and inertia of leadership within an organization. Isomorphism of leadership refers to the phenomenon that the majority of leaders at different hierarchical levels within an organization share similar leadership attributes such as similar leader traits and behavioral patterns. Inertia of leadership includes the phenomenon that leaders seldom change their leadership style over time. Homogenizing filters, socialization and modeling are assumed to influence new organizational leaders to adopt existing leadership styles that have been accepted by organizational members and stakeholders. This process makes leaders share similar leadership style and traits. When a dominant type of leadership emerges within an organization, it will have the tendency to resist to changes and sustain over time. Behavioral routines developed by organizational members, persistence as the virtue of leadership and commitment are assumed to prevent leaders from changing their leadership style. Implications for organizational change and industrial relations are discussed.
