This paper examines the implementation, and operational purpose of the Dongjeobrye in Hoesu-ri, Daejeong-hyeon, Jeju from the 19th century, focusing on the Dongjeobryeseongchaek (洞接禮成冊). Hoesu-ri was administratively separated from Jungmun-ri in 1852, and the Dongjeobryeseongchaek describes lists of those who participated in the Dongjeobrye, the amounts contributed to the Dongjeobrye fund, and records of how those funds were used from 1852 to 1931. First, the rules for the Hoesu-ri Dongjeobrye were simply stipulated focusing on the management of funeral equipment, such as Sangyoe (bier) and Chail(awning), and the use of auxiliary funds. People who were serving cheonyeok duty (menial work assigned by the government) or had accumulated a bad reputation were restricted from using funeral items such as Sangyoe and Chail. Second, when examining the list of participants in the Hoesu-ri Dongjeobrye, although those who are serving the government assigned work such as mokja (a stableman) or yeongdaphan (a farmer who worked for the Jeju provincial farm) were free people (yangin), since they were categorized under cheonyeok, they were limited in their participation. Additionally, those who belonged to the lowest social class, such as sano (a privately owned slave) were also excluded from participating. Joining the Hoesu-ri Dongjeobrye was not mandatory; rather, it seems to have been determined by individual or family circumstances. Third, participants in the Hoesu-ri Dongjeobrye were required to mak a certain contribution, and the accumulated funds were used to purchase and repair funeral items like Sangyoe and Chail. These funds were also spent for common expenses such as contributing to local taxes including Dongpojeon and Gongma, maintaining household registries, village rituals and meetings, and changing the name of the village. From this, it can be concluded that the purpose of the Hoesu-ri Dongjeobrye was to establish a fund for preparing and repairing funeral equipment, collectively responding to taxes, and covering common expenses for the village.
