<나무꾼과 선녀> 서사의 웹툰 수용과 재해석의 방향- <망월선녀설화>와 <계룡선녀전>을 중심으로 -

초록

This study set out to analyze the narrative interesting elements of the classical narrative The Fairy and the Woodcutter and examine the acceptance patterns and changes of a classical narrative in two webtoons based on The Fairy and the Woodcutter, The Tale of Mangwol Fairy and The Story of Gyeryong Fairy. Narrative openness and the symbolism of a celestial rob represent the narrative interesting elements of the tale The Fairy and the Woodcutter. Since The Fairy and the Woodcutter is an oral folktale, the audience intervened in its narrative and accumulated quotations, requotations, and counterarguments about the story. This narrative openness leaves enough room to retell or transform the narrative even today. The fairy’s celestial robe represents women’s sacredness, an opportunity for men, and women’s independence and desire, and these are still valid values today. The two webtoons The Tale of Mangwol Fairy and The Story of Gyeryong Fairy accept the narrative of The Fairy and the Woodcutter and transform it in new directions including changes to the main characters, structure of conflicts, development of narrative, nature of the celestial robe, space setting, and time setting. The two webtoons, however, have differences from each other in the viewpoint of interpreting the original story from the perspectives of desire and understanding. While The Tale of Mangwol Fairy focuses on desire to interpret the characters and develops its narrative in the fantasy action style, The Story of Gyeryong Fairy focuses on the sympathy and understanding of characters as well as their desire and combines romance with fantasy. They show that the modern reinterpretations of a classical narrative can be diverse according to the interpretation and retelling of the original story. The acceptance and transformation of a classical narrative into a webtoon should thus move in a direction of combining today’s problematic consciousness and popularity based on the understanding of the classical narrative.
