초록

This study aims to analyze spatial mismatch between population and employment and excess commuting for the Seoul metropolitan area by using three analytical methods: 1) cubic spline function for estimating population and job density distribution; 2) dissimilarity index (DI); and 3) linear programming for estimating excess commuting. The major findings can be summarized as follows: First, estimated cubic spline density functions clearly show different patterns of spatial distribution between population and employment densities. Jobs were highly concentrated on the CBD area and subcenters were identified at the range of 10-15Km from the CBD, while high population density areas were identified at the range of 8-15Km. Second, as we expect, Seoul's DI is higher than suburban areas such as Kyunggi province, indicating relatively high spatial mismatch. Third, the results of excess commuting estimation support jobs-housing imbalance of the central city, showing longest commuting time and distance of the employees working in the CBD and subcenters. Because of limited housing supply within the central city, workers in the centers have the smallest excess commuting rates in terms of both time and distance.
