Research Trends on Children and Adolescents with Borderline Intellectual Functioning: A Text Mining Approach

초록

This study aims to systematically identify the discourse structure and trends of domestic academic papers on borderline intelligence children and adolescents using text mining techniques, covering publications in Korean journals up to 2024 for individuals aged 9 to 24. A total of 62 research papers were analyzed using keyword frequency analysis, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling, and semantic network analysis. The findings are as follows. First, topic modeling revealed four main discourses in the order of social-emotional, language comprehension, academic achievement, and cognitive function. Second, keywords such as “intelligence,” “borderline,” “language,” “social,” “behavior,” and “emotion” ranked high, indicating research tendencies encompassing both cognitive and socio-emotional development. Third, disciplinary distribution was most prominent in education, followed by special education, psychology/therapy, and social welfare, confirming a disciplinary bias toward education and a lack of interdisciplinary balance. Fourth, the annual publication trend showed a sharp increase since 2016, and a continued rise from 2020, suggesting an association with policy changes such as amendments to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the enactment of the Basic Academic Ability Guarantee Act. Based on these results, the study suggests a shift toward a strengths-based research paradigm beyond a deficit model in the field of borderline intelligence children and adolescents, enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration and participation, particularly from social welfare and other fields for a more comprehensive understanding, and expansion of empirical studies to verify policy effectiveness.
