초록

Humanities as an academic discipline of human studies is for the exploration and cultivation of humanity. Humanities per se arose in the Renaissance age when the church authority was challenged for the human integrity and prospered in the nineteenth and early twentieth century when the wholeness of knowledge and education was sought for in the modern university. The contemporary crisis of humanities is the outcome of the division of knowledge for the productivity of knowledge production and of the corporate management of the university on the basis of economic principle. The future of humanities is doomed in that the education of humanities would not continue in most universities while the continuing prosperity of humanities in a handful of prestigious universities would be for the reproduction of the privileged dominant class. In order to go against the historical grain of the humanities’ gloomy future, humanists in academy should forgo the professional specialty of disciplinary humanities and take up the amateurism that would produce a general wholesome knowledge of the human, social, and natural world for the sake of humanity, not for power and money.
