In order to raise the level of researches on the wooden documents discovered in the Korean Peninsula and expand the base, systematic organization and standardization is essential. However, even the definition of wooden document, which will be fundamental, has not yet to be agreed upon. We present the definition and standardized naming, and accordingly count the number of wooden documents of Baekje and Silla. Firstly, we define wooden document as ‘a wooden item which has been processed to write and actually has letters written on’ and add some provisory clause. Only those discovered by archeological excavations are included. Those with the purpose of stamping or printing, and those with a clear purpose other than writing but some letters added are excluded. If the purpose is difficult to clearly specified or if the trace of writing is perceived on it even though unreadable, regard it as a wooden document possibly, but if it is certain that only picture or figure was drawn not letters, then exclude it. Magical symbols and signatures are regarded as letters in a broad sense. As a result of recounting according to this definition, the wooden documents of Baekje total 254 pieces including 141 pieces of shavings, and the wooden documents of Silla total 410 including lost 4 pieces. There is a total of 660 wooden documents of Baekje and Silla that have survived. To sort out the confusion that several names were given to a single wooden document, it is necessary to determine the name of each wooden document and propose the model for designation method. Therefore, we made the proposing names according to our own principles. A file containing the list of proposing names and information for all wooden documents of Baekje and Silla is uploaded at “https://mokkan.kr/33” so that any one could freely use it. We will continue to update it in the future.
