The members of the genus Yersinia are aerobic, gram-negative rods belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus Yersinia consists of 11 species: they are Y. pestis, Y. aldovae, Y. bercovieri, Y. enterocolitica, Y. frederiksenii, Y. intermedia, Y. kristensenii, Y. mollaretii, Y. pseudotuberculosis, Y. rohdei, Y. ruckeri. The species of Y. pestis, Y. enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis have been known as pathogenic members of the genus. In this study, 29 Y. enterocolitica and 17 Y. pseudotuberculosis iselates were analyzed by rep-PCR genomic fingerprinting Y. enterocolitica serotype O:3 was the most prevalent serotype (n=19, 65.5%) followed by serotypes O:13 (n=4, 13.8%), O:16 (n=3, 10.3%), O:2 (n=2, 6.9%) and O:9 (n=1, 3.5%). Rep-PCR genomic fingerprinting including REP-, ERIC-, BOX-, and SERE-PCR procedures were carried out for their usefulness new as taxonomic markers for the genus Yersinia on the basis of dendrograms of a total of 52 strains of the genus Yersinia. As a result, the best definitive grouping was obtained by using ERIC-PCR. It is concluded that ERIC-PCR could be used as an extremely reliable, reproducible, rapid, and highly discriminatory method for the differentiation of genus Yersinia.
