초록
Purpose: The continuous changes in South Korea’s university admissions system has had a significant impact on high school education. While physical education high schools were originally designed to nurture elite athletes, the growing complexity and diversity of university entrance systems have presented new challenges, particularly in aligning secondary education with students’ future academic and career paths. A major contributing factor th these challenges is the lack of scholarly engagement with the linkage between physical education high schools and university admissions policies. Methods: To address this issue, this study collected data from the School Information Disclosure System, publications by the Korea University Sports Federation (KUSF), and relevant academic literature, and conducted a comparative analysis using a document analysis method. The analysis was performed based on four dimensions: university admissions structure, curriculum, extracurricular activities, and sports fostering programs. Results: The results showed that the current university entrance system for physical education majors employs a variety of selection methods, and student academic records are reflected in most admission tracks. In addition, the curriculum of physical education high schools was found to be heavily concentrated on major-specific practical subjects, with limited diversity in extracurricular activities and elective courses. Furthermore, some sports were identified as having a relatively higher number of student-athletes fostered at the high school level compared to the number of available university admission positions. Conclusion: Based on these findings, the study proposes four strategic directions for the restructuring of physical education high schools: (1) two admission tracks, (2) diversification of major-specific activity subjects, (3) enhancement of extracurricular programs, and (4) reallocation of fostering sports.
