Visiting Policy and Nurses' Attitudes towards Visiting in Intensive Care Units

초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the visitation regulation of intensive care units (ICU) and to explore the attitudes towards visitation for ICU among ICU nurses. This study was a cross-sectional survey. Data on ICU visitation regulation was obtained from 27 secondary and 43 tertiary medical centers in Korea and data on nurses' attitudes were collected from 360 ICU nurses from September1, 2009 to October 30, 2009. Visiting hours a day ranged from 30 to 120 minutes a day and most medical centers were limiting visitation about 1 hour per day. Visiting was allowed primarily to adults and children over the age of 13. Nurses' attitudes toward increasing ICU visitation hours were not very positive. The score of nurses' perceived barriers was higher than that of perceived benefits. Efforts and support to increase the visitation hours and to change the nurses' attitudes toward visitation are needed.
