Open Source Software Development in Enterprise Information Systems

초록

Open source software (OSS) offers businesses significant ways to save money; avoid vendor lock-in; and increase adaptability by opening the market for enterprise systems that support enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and supply chain management (SCM). We refer to such enterprise systems as “enterprise information systems” (EIS). OSS development related to EIS from a leading online community, SourceForge.net, was used to examine how operations management-related modules of enterprise software are being developed. Applications are categorized as either value-adding from the perspective of operations (for example, e-business activity, production planning, distribution/logistics, quality, and materials management, as well as operational activities of CRM and SCM) or support functions (for example, financial, accounting, personnel, maintenance, and research-and-development management). We found OSS development to be more advanced in the support areas of operations rather than in core activities. This is also the case with SCM support to EIS, while there is a balance of support and value-adding projects related to CRM functions.
