일제강점기 권번 기생의 일람표 연구(4) - 1938년 서평양예기(西平壤藝妓) 소속의 기생 중심으로

The purpose of this article is to analyze the current table containing the list of gisaeng belonging to ‘West Pyeongyang Yegi’ in mid-July 1938. The 1938 ‘West Pyeongyang Yegi Current List’ is also a kind of ‘first diary’ and ‘list’, and the list of gisaeng totals 448 people. The title ‘Yegi’ was used interchangeably with gisaeng during the Japanese colonial period. The ‘West Pyongyang Yegi Current Table’ appears to be similar in size to A3 paper. Contact information for the office of ‘West Pyongyang Yegi’ can be found through phone numbers such as 521 and 2026 in Pyongyang. Even in Pyongyang, government officials belonging to the Pyongyang government office, which were prominent enough to have been active as shipboarders during the Joseon Dynasty, were transformed into the Pyongyang Gisaeng Association. In 1919, there were 282 gisaengs belonging to the Daejeong Kwon clan and 7 gisaengs belonging to the Pyongyang Gisaeng Association, which were listed in 『Joseon Beauty Bogam』. Later, compared to the 201 gisaengs in the 1929 「Giseong Kwon clan current table」, the ‘West Pyeongyang Yegi Current Table’ is as many as 1,000. There are as many as 448 people. A more in-depth analysis of the research subject is needed to simply determine the list of current tables based on numbers alone. In order to approach each gisaeng's life in detail, research on the character's life history is a prerequisite, and data on the big data of 'gisaeng' is essential. Since those materials are scattered in unknown time and space, we want to continuously explore related materials. In this way, the ‘West Pyeongyang Yegi Current Table’ published in 1938 is significant as it provides important research data on the existing gisaeng in Pyongyang.
