The Composition and Financial Operation of Baektori Hyangyak in Hamyang, Gyeongsangdo in The Late 19th Century

초록

This paper is about background of establishment, composition, operation and financial operation of Baektori in Hamyang, Gyeongsangdo, based on the data from “Baektorihyangyakan” and “Baektohyangyakgyeobonjengi”. Baektori Hyangyak was established in 1982 due to Hyangyak policy of Lee HunYoung, governor of Gyeongsangdo and cooperation of nobles of Baektori Baektori Hyangyak was operated mainly in Sangbaek, Taegojeong, Naebaek, Jeonjeon, Namhyo and Maekjeong villages of Baektori. When looking at “Jeolmok” of “Baektori Hyangyakan” contents related to contributions for marriage and funeral were not checked but it was confirmed that the contents related to lectures, names of righteous people and names of bad people were emphasized. Through this, it was found that Baektori Hyangyak paid attention to reformation of villages. In other words, while the 18th century Juhyun Hyangyak was a seawall to prevent socio-economical fluctuation which served a strong purpose to control villages, Juhyun hyangyak, implemented in the late 19th century was considered to focused on reformation of villages rather than strict control of villages. The lists of executives of Baektori Hyangyak from 1892 to 1894 were confirmed and contract were changed each time but Hundo, Jikwol, Haim and etc. served 2-3 terms consecutively. Also, the key feature of Baektori Hyangyak was that the financial data of lecture remains. This research was focusing on the financial records of the lectures on August 13th, 1892 and April 16th, 1893. From each lecture dues were collected from the members and most of the dues were spent on supplies for the lecture. A distinguished item from the expense list on the lecture of April,1893 was that after purchasing white paper some of it was distributed to a house of a slave as an aid to a funeral. Considering that the social hierarchy got weakened in the late 19th century, one slave per a member of Hyangyak was nominally recorded but there is a high chance that the aid for funerals were actually paid to the member. Baektori Hyangyak is historically valuable as an example to confirm the operation of Hyangyak that was exercised in Dong/Ri in the late 19th century. Since the records remain focusing from 1892 to 1893, there are limits to the research about the operation after that period. However, due to various changes such as Donghak Peasants Revolution, it is considered to unable to maintain the operation of Hamyang Baektori Hyangyak. Although this research is the result of limited feed, I intend to expand the horizon of the research of Juhyun Hyangyak in the late 19th century with Hyangchon related data from various regions.
