Interdisciplinary Approach to Literature and Theology: Jonathan Edwards’ Writings and His Influence on American Literature

초록

This paper explores Jonathan Edwards’s writings and his influence on modern American fiction through an interdisciplinary approach combining literature and religion. It analyzes Edwards’s autobiographical writings, sermons, and revival texts for their literary structure and theological depth. His autobiographies reflect a ‘theology of the soul’ shaped by introspection, while his sermons embody the Puritan homiletic tradition, balancing doctrine with imagination through structured appeals to intellect, emotion, and imagery. His revival works, including Some Thoughts Concerning the Revival and Religious Affections, detail the nature of piety and spiritual renewal. A recent worldwide resurgence in Edwards scholarship, particularly through Yale’s Edwards projects, underscores this renewed interdisciplinary interest. The paper also traces Edwards’s legacy in 19th- and 20th-century American literature, especially in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s critical engagement, the theological themes found in Susan Warner, and Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead, demonstrating his lasting literary impact.
