The Relationship between Working Mothers' Work-Family Conflict and Adolescent Children's School Adjustment: The Mediating Effects of Family Communication and Adolescents’ Executive Function Difficulties

초록

This study examined the mediating effects of family communication and adolescents’ executive function difficulties in the relationship between working mothers’ work-family conflict and their adolescent children’s school adjustment. Using data from the 15th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), structural equation modeling was conducted with 816 employed mothers and their middle school children. The analysis revealed that mothers’ work-family conflict negatively affected family communication, which in turn significantly influenced children’s school adjustment through their executive function difficulties. These findings suggest the need to pay closer attention to the work-family balance of mothers raising adolescent children and to recognize the complex pathways through which such conflicts impact child development, thereby providing appropriate support.
