The Effect of Non-invasive Brain Stimulation using ICT on High-speed and Low-speed Strength

초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) applied over the primary motor cortex(M1) on maximum muscle strength. Fifteen healthy recreationally active males were recruited for participation and we performed a randomized single-blind, SHAM-stimulated, and counter-balanced crossover design. An anodal tDCS current was applied over the primary motor cortex (M1) for 20 min at 2 mA, and in the SHAM intervention, the current was first applied for 30 s at 1.25 mA, after which it was terminated. All participants were randomly assigned to either the tDCS or the SHAM intervention, and after receiving treatment once each for two days, and then power clean, bench-press, back-squat, and deadlift 1RM(one-repetition maximum) were measured. Results indicated that power clean following tDCS were significantly higher than those after SHAM intervention (p<.05). There was no significant difference in bench-press 1RM between two groups either (p>.05). There was no significant difference in back-squat 1RM between two groups either (p>.05). There was no significant difference in deadlift 1RM between two groups either (p>.05). These results suggest that tDCS could be effective in enhancing power clean performance, which corresponds to high-speed strength. However, tDCS intervention has no effect on bench-press, back-squat, and deadlift 1RM. In future studies, it is necessary to investigate clarifying the location of the electrode, intensity, and duration for maximum muscle strength improvement.
