Quantitative Analyses of Test-takers' Speech Samples in a Semi-direct Oral Proficiency Test: Focus on Proficiency Difference

초록

Lee, Ho. 2015. Quantitative Analyses of Test-takers' Speech Samples in a Semi-direct Oral Proficiency Test: Focus on Proficiency Difference. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 15-2, 259-277. The current study aims to examine the quantitative indices to maximally discriminate highly proficient test-takers from low ones in a semi-directed speaking test. The researcher initially identified two fundamental indices, seven accuracy-related measures, and fifteen fluency-related measures from the analyses of 60 test-takers' speech samples. A half of the samples were from high proficient group, while the other half were from low proficient group. The several T-tests and discriminant analyses showed that the number of error-free T-unit had the strongest discriminatory power while some fluency indices such as the mean length of pause and the number of fillers did not successfully draw the boundary between high and low proficient levels. This study ends up with the implication that accuracy-related variables may still take significant effect on raters' overall judgment about test-takers' speaking performance.
