In this article, we discussed the perception of maternal love in the novel of Kim Yu-gyeong, a North Korean defector. Kim Yu-gyeong is the most outstanding writer of North Korean defector-turned-writers who began to emerge anew since the 2000s. She published her first full-length novel, Love Song of the Young, in 2012, and published her second full-length novel in 2016, continuing her career centered on full-length novels. The number of North Korean defectors has increased a lot since the mid-to late 1990s when the country was on a march of hardship. Since the 2000s, the number of presentations of works by North Korean defectors has increased little by little, and the concept of North Korean defector literature has been discussed in earnest. Accordingly, there should be more discussions on the literature of North Korean defectors. This article focused on Kim Yu-gyeong's work, which reveals both her identity as a North Korean defector and her concerns. Motherhood is important, especially in both of her two works. In this process, the fundamental problem of human death and motherhood is closely related. The impact of the special identity of North Korean defectors or inmates in political prison camps on the perception of death and maternal love is deeply related to the division of our society, which can be referred to as the North Korean defector diaspora.
