The Effects of Transition shock and Academic Burnout on Career Identity among Nursing Students : Mediation Effect of Flourishing

초록

Purpose: This study examined the effects of transition shock and academic burnout on career identity among nursing students, focusing on the mediating effect of flourishing. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was applied to 191 Korean nursing students with clinical practice experience. Data were collected using validated scales for transition shock, academic burnout, career identity, and flourishing. Analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, multiple regression, and Hayes’ PROCESS macro. Results: Transition shock negatively correlated with career identity (r=-.50, p<.001). Academic burnout also negatively correlated with career identity (r=-.52, p<.001). In the multiple regression analysis, transition shock and academic burnout explained 34.7% of the variance in career identity. Flourishing partially mediated both the relationship between transition shock and career identity (B=-0.12, 95% CI [-0.19, -0.06]) and between academic burnout and career identity (B=-0.12, 95% CI [-0.20, -0.06]). Conclusion: Transition shock and academic burnout adversely affect nursing students' career identity, while flourishing mitigates these adverse effects. Enhancing flourishing through educational and counseling interventions may help students adapt more effectively to clinical practice and foster a stable professional identity.
