초록
Despite the growing academic interest in the effects of sleep deprivation on adolescents’ physical and mental health, criminological research in South Korea addressing the relationship between sleep duration and adolescent delinquency remains scarce. To bridge this academic gap, this study explores the correlation between the two using data from the 2021 Korean Children and Youth Happiness Index Survey—a large-scale national questionnaire. Analyzing a sample of 5,376 middle and high school students, the study found that not only short sleep duration during weekdays and weekends but also excessive sleep on weekends showed a statistically significant positive association with delinquent behavior in adolescents. Specifically, weekday sleep duration displayed a linear relationship with the risk of delinquency, whereas weekend sleep duration demonstrated a U-shaped nonlinear relationship. These patterns remained significant even after controlling for other criminological risk factors such as stress, attachment, and experiences of discrimination. Subgroup analyses further revealed that this pattern was only significant among male students and among those who perceived their sleep quality to be poor.
