Study on Baek Shin-Ae Model Novel-Symbol of Colonial Women by Korean and Japanese Male Writers-

초록

The six novels analyzed in this study are modeled on the modern female novelist Beak Shin-Ae, and they are written in Japanese. In the novels, Baek Shin-Ae is represented as the “witch” by males of the empire and colonies, thereby making them the object of men's desires. In the novels of Ishikawa Tatsuzo, Joseon’s women appear as ominous beings resembling witches. From the women who do not belong to “me”, “I” is engulfed by anxiety and fear, and rather qualified by the fear of suffering. The disobedient Joseon’s women symbolize “colonial Joseon” which cannot be subordinated forever, and the fear that comes from it can be seen as a metaphor for “the fear of imperialism.” The male protagonist in the works of Jang Hyuk-Ju is the novelist himself. The reason Baek Shin-Ae is used repeatedly in Jang Hyuk-Ju's model novels is because of her representation as a "Korean literature organization." The frustration of desire, which implies his desire to be recognized by literary organization in Joseon, is metaphorized by the betrayal of a woman resembling a witch.
