A Survey of Students’ Perceptions Toward Peer Evaluation in the Team Project-based ACT course

초록

Team project-based learning has many benefits for a student’s communication and professional development through collaborative learning but it is difficult to determine the individual contributions to the group evaluation tasks. Many researchers suggest peer evaluation should be an effective tool for each student to participate actively in a team project. This study explores the perceptions of students toward peer evaluation. The peer evaluation instrument utilized in the Spring 2017 semester in ACT(Action, Communication, Teamwork) course was modified from the questionnaire developed by McClare et al. The questionnaire consisted of 15 questions and consisted of Likert-Scale statements. The peer evaluation constituted 10 % of each student’s overall grade. The questionnaire was randomly answered by 117 students who participated in the peer evaluation process in ACT class. The results show that the students are very honest and truthful in evaluating their teammates. The results also support the peer evaluation is a reliable tool in grade system that permits an instructor to evaluate and grade individual performance more equitably within a group in the team project-based courses.
