Three Layers of Costumes Appearing in Jia Zhangke’s ‘Hometown Trilogy’

초록

This paper analyzes the symbolic meaning of the three costumes, focusing on Jia Zhangke’s early films as known as “Hometown Trilogy” - Xiao Wu(1997), Platform(2000), and Unknown Pleasures(2002) - Jia Zhangke rejects the traditional grand narrative but focuses on the little man’s daily life. ‘The little man’ represents the changes in Chinese society and is also the main character leading the flow of history. The costumes in Jia Zhagke’s films catch the history and everyday life of China. Although we can see the group of people wearing various outfits in “Hometown Trilogy”, I will focus on just three costumes – the gray suit, T-shirt, and the police uniform - for concentrating the discussion. The suit and gray color realistically reveal the atmosphere of confusion and depression in the small town in China in the 1990s. T-shirt is the icon of youth, and the T-shirts worn by Zhang Jun in Platform and Xiao Ji in Unkown Pleasures have different colors and styles. This difference represents the change in Chinese society that has faced Economic reform and open door policy and the globalization. The key to change is the contradiction of globalization that Chinese life is material abundance and spiritual devastation. In Jia Zhangke’s films, the police are represented as suppressing and controlling the youth generation and Other. “Hometown Trilogy” can be evaluated as the realism films that look at the changes and contradictions in Chinese society with critical perspective through the suit, t-shirt, and the subversive representation of police uniforms.
