In this study, two types, namely carbonyl and electrolytic iron particles with different filler structures, and their hybrid (1:1 ratio) were investigated for the magnetically active responsive properties in acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)-based magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). The anisotropic MREs were prepared by solvent mixing and applying a magnetic field during cross-linking of rubber. A stronger magnetic effect on stress relaxation was found for smaller and round shape carbonyl iron particles filled compounds compared to irregular electrolytic and hybrid iron filler-containing MREs. The carbonyl might be the better choice for smooth damping due to sufficient reinforcement and strong magnetic responsive properties. Bigger and irregular electrolytic iron particles with higher filler content can be used for vibration absorbers due to improved stiffness and magnetic properties. However, the hybrid filler containing regular and irregular particles with widely varied sizes should be avoided due to the inferior compressive modulus and lower magnetic effect.
