대학 유학생의 교양교육 경험과 요구 분석을 통한 교양기초교육 개선 방안 탐색 ― A대학 사례를 중심으로 ―

초록

This study examined international students’ satisfaction with and need for liberal arts education in Korean universities, while drawing educational implications. To this end, it surveyed 96 international students enrolled at University A and analyzed the data using descriptive statistics. The results are as follows. First, international students reported a relatively high level of overall satisfaction with university life, as well as with their major and liberal arts courses. Second, factors influencing satisfaction with liberal arts courses were more strongly associated with instructional and environmental variables, such as the suitability of courses for international students and the availability of desired courses, than with learner-related factors such as Korean-language proficiency. In particular, satisfaction was higher when courses were appropriately designed for international students or when students were able to enroll in their preferred courses, compared to when linguistic difficulty was low. This suggests that satisfaction with liberal arts education is closely related to the extent to which educational offerings align with learners’ needs. Third, regarding the desired types of liberal arts courses, students expressed a preference for academic Korean courses aimed at improving their academic skills, as well as general-education courses designed for domestic students but adapted for international students. This indicates that international students’ needs in liberal arts education extend beyond language support to include their participation as learners in higher education. Overall, this study confirms that international students’ experiences and needs in liberal arts education are closely related to instructional and environmental factors. The findings suggest the need to expand the perspective on international students’ liberal arts education beyond language-centered education toward a broader framework of general education for higher-education learners.
