초록
When the Bible was first translated into Korean, words related to λυτρόω was translated to ‘sok’(속, 贖). Its meaning includes ‘paying cost’ which was used widely in the Joseon Dynasty. The characteristic of ‘sok’ is categorized as its role as a legal term, emphasize on change of social status and equivalency of the payment. The subject of ‘sok’ is guilt or specific social status which was ‘paid’ by offering property, returning one’s position, making a contribution, or presenting one’s replacement. These characteristics of ‘sok’ matches with principles of the bible, such as the salvation and childhood; the nature of God; the Holy Father. Since ‘sok’ was used widely in the Joseon Dynasty, the translations of redemption, ransom, atonement, the sin offering used with ‘sok’ was relatively easier for people at that time period. On the contrary, people today criticize it without any understanding of ‘sok.’
