A Study on the Usability for Smart Home of Appliance Applications in an Internet of Things -Focused on Robot Vacuum Cleaners-

초록

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become more and more influential due to the connection between things and the Internet through the use of smartphones and other terminals. In the field of the Internet of Things, the Smart Home market is expanding, and thanks to this, the market for robot vacuum cleaners will continue to grow as humanity in the Corona 19 era places more importance on hygiene and cleanliness. And under the Internet of Things environment, smart home-based robot vacuum cleaner apps can be controlled remotely and conveniently with a smartphone from anywhere, but it is still difficult for users to precisely control the robot vacuum cleaner through the app. This study presents a design direction for a smart home-based robot vacuum cleaner application in the Internet of Things environment, expecting usability and high-quality usability of the application, and was conducted through literature research, user questionnaires and in-depth interviews and usability evaluation based on the ten principles of Jakob Nielsen’s Heuristic Evaluation. Therefore, the scope of this study is to analyze the usability aspects of the top three domestic and international robot vacuum cleaner apps introduced to the Korean market: Xiaomi’s Mi Home, LG’s ThinQ and Samsung’s Smart Things robot vacuum cleaner app. A checklist questionnaire was created. In-depth interviews were conducted with users who had experienced 10 robot vacuum cleaner applications to evaluate their usability. As a result of the analysis, three items were rated high: the consistency with which the application is standardized and presented to the user, the accuracy with which the system is configured to match the real world, and reverse operations. Therefore, we expect that the results of this research will be used for the design and development of smart home-based robot vacuum cleaner applications in the Internet of Things environment.
