초록

This study introduces a novel borated cementitious material capable of shielding both gamma-rays and thermal neutrons. Conventional cement paste has proven ineffective for thermal neutron shielding because even a small amount of boron—a key element for thermal neutron shielding—dramatically delays the initial setting. In this study, a hybrid radiation-shielding material was developed using geocement combined with borax and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag. Multiple radiation-shielding performance analyses were conducted to evaluate its effectiveness. The results demonstrated that geocement can incorporate 44 times more boron compared to cement paste, significantly enhancing its thermal neutron shielding performance by over 300 %. Additionally, the incorporation of high-density BOF slag improved the gamma-ray shielding performance by 20 %, confirming the dual capability to shield both thermal neutrons and gamma-rays. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
