초록

According to power-dependence theory, one’s dependence on resources received from the partner, which reversely translates into one's positional power, is affected by the availability of resources from alternative sources. We expect that parent-child relations have relational characters proposed by the power-dependence theory. We surveyed 207 children who are under 24 years old enrolled in middle school to college, and their fathers and mothers, in November and December, 2017. The more available alternative resources the child have, excepting college students, the more power they use on their fathers as expected. Contradicting our expectation, fathers' dependence on children increases their power use. Negative interaction effect of dependence and alternative sources on power use is also found between fathers and children. Positive interaction effect was found among college students' power use on mothers. We discussed the implications of identity as a power base in Korean parents-child relationship.
