후천적 저시력 성인을 위한 언어 기반 미술관 접근성 연구 -구겐하임미술관 접근성 프로그램 「Mind's Eye」를 중심으로-

This study examines art appreciation in adults with acquired low vision from the perspective of cultural accessibility and explores the potential of a language-based approach to art appreciation. To this end, it reviews domestic studies on art education and museum education for people with visual impairments and low vision, and analyzes the Guggenheim Museum’s accessibility program Mind’s Eye as a case study. The findings show that relevant studies and programs in Korea have largely focused on children and adolescents and have mainly emphasized tactile or multisensory experiences. In contrast, few studies have addressed adults with acquired low vision as independent subjects of art appreciation. The study also suggests that art appreciation in adults with acquired low vision can be understood as a cognitive process of image reconstruction in which residual visual cues, visual memory, and structured verbal information interact. The analysis of Mind’s Eye indicates that the program supports art appreciation through a step-by-step verbal description structure—moving from overall composition to key forms, relationships, directions, color, and contrast—and through question-based interaction that encourages active interpretive participation. This study argues that art appreciation in adults with acquired low vision should be understood not as a matter of compensating for sensory deficit, but as a process of reconstructing images. In doing so, it suggests that museum accessibility should be discussed not only in terms of physical support but also in terms of designing the cognitive structure of appreciation. The study is meaningful in that it proposes directions for language-based support for art appreciation in museum practice.
