A Study on Imagination through the Semiological Theories of Saussure and Barthes

초록

This study begins with Saussure’s theory of the sign and explores how imagination functions within Barthes’ semiology. Saussure explains language through the arbitrary link between signifier and signified, showing that the sign is rooted in social conventions and collective agreements. Barthes inherits this concept and expands semiology into a field of creative thought, where imagination is seen as an active force linked to the structure of signs. Imagination transcends the binary of reality and fantasy and generates new meaning through paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations. Barthes classifies this process into symbolic, paradigmatic, and syntagmatic consciousness, emphasizing how imagination animates the sign as a vital and evolving presence. Thus, signs are not merely interpreted but actively mediate cognition and creative perception. Semiological imagination becomes central to acts of language, narrative formation, and cultural myth, serving as a foundation for how humans produce and reconstruct meaning. In this sense, the theoretical lineage from Saussure to Barthes establishes imagination as a key concept within contemporary semiological theory.
