Parenting process model during the transition to parenthood : Mediation effect of psychological adjustment

초록

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the paths through which a series of variables predict first-time mothers via their effect on maternal psychological adjustment. Based on the process model of parenting, the current study examined the direct and indirect effects of mother’s factors, child’s factors, and contextual factors through the mediation of psychological adjustment indicated by self-efficacy, parenting stress and depression. The data of 984 first-time mothers participating in the Panel Study of Korean Children was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) technique. The results showed that mothers’ education, child’s gender, temperament, social support, marital satisfaction, and maternal employment significantly predicted mothers’ psychological adjustment, which in turn predicted positive parenting style. The mediation effect of psychological adjustment was statistically supported. Mothers’ education and employment also directly predicted positive parenting. Limitations and policy implications of the study were discussed.
